Back in December I told you about this stool that used to belong to my grandmother. It was badly stained and needed a little TLC. I checked with Mom to make sure it was OK to paint the base. Mom is the one who made the stool for my grandmother thirty years ago. She gave her blessing to paint it and I have been waiting for a warm day ever since.
Guess what? A warm day is not in the forecast and I am not good at waiting until conditions are perfect. If I was, nothing would ever get done around here. So today I began working on the stool.
Mom told me that to get the big stains out of the needlepoint I should use peroxide. As usual, Mom was right. The stains are out and the needlepoint looks much better now. I simply dipped a wash cloth into the peroxide and wiped the fabric until the noticeable stains disappeared.
Next, I lightly sanded the stool to roughen it up, then gave it two coats of spray paint.
Finally, I sanded it on the edges to let the original wood show through a bit.
I think my grandmother would approve and I will always think of her when I prop my feet.
I am sharing this with Funky Junk, A Soft Place To Land, Twice Remembered, The DIY Showoff, and In Between Naps on the Porch.

I love the way it turned out. Very nice. Peroxide works miracles on things.
Aloha, love the stool, I recently inherited some needle point pieces that I didn't know what I would do with them but I wanted to do something different then a pillow. a footstool would be perfect and the peroxide tip is awesome too!

Funny, I never knew about peroxide and how it removes stains. Hopefully no one will ruin a family heirloom and blame me for telling them "dip a washcloth in peroxide and wipe until the stains lift"... ha ha, but it did work for me.
The stool looks nice. Did your mom needlepoint the butterflys? Peroxide is amazing for getting out tough stains...like blood.
Peroxide to help lift and wipe away a stain is news to me! Thanks for the tip. And your little foot stool is so very nice! Nice that you know it's history!
I believe that my mother needle-pointed (if that is a word) the whole thing...and she is still at it.
I love it in white! Butterflies are all over the place in pictures these days. This little stool fits right in with today's decor!
Hi Rene, Looks great with the updated look! So needlepoint is really pretty, too! I have to remember the peroxide trick.
Now you have the memories, the original needlework, and a beautiful new look. It looks great!
Pretty! Didn't know that about peroxide. Wonder if it would take a glaring pet stain off of the couch? ;) I love decor with a history; my mother is closer to "grandmother" age, so I posted today about some of her vintage things at my house.
Love the stool and what a wonderful tip to know that peroxide works to take stains out. I will have to try that. Hugs, marty
That stool looks great again. I am sure your granna is proud.
It's so cute with the white paint and I love that it has family history attached to it. Thanks for the peroxide tip, too!
That is GORGEOUS!! And I love the peroxide tip! Thanks to your mom!
Thanks so much for your nice comment on my french chairs project and the tip about peroxide. Isn't it great to take a piece with family history and make it all your own. Glad I found your blog.
A very cute footstool. Thanks for the peroxide tip!
Your mom is a smart and talented woman, and she obviously passed on those traits!
I like your blog so much, I found so many pretty projects here, and this footstool is great, I can never put my fott on it:))
Very pretty! I had no idea about the peroxide! Another tip stored away...:-)
Hmm peroxide huh? Gotta remember that and try it on many stained items.
I love the little stool. And I am a sucker for needlepoint.
