Two More Things For the Playroom

I apologize for posting twice in one day, but I am working the rest of the week and wanted to share...

The playroom comes in and out of favor for me as a project to work on.  Recently, it has been in favor.  It hasn't been a huge project, but I wanted it to look like more than just a room with a TV and gaming equipment.  Slowly, we are getting there.

1. Pelmet Box
In the playroom we have wooden blinds for window treatments, but I wanted to add to them.  Curtains would have been to imposing so I decided to go with pelmet boxes.

To make a pelmet box you will need:
  1. fabric
  2. foam core
  3. measuring device, my old stand-by yardstick and tape measures did the trick
  4. something sharp to cut the foam board with, my least favorite part
  5. batting
  6. trim if desired
  7. staple gun with 1/4" staples
  8. fabric glue if you plan to add trim
  9. velcro tabs

First I took careful measurements from the outside of each side of the window molding.  To get the depth I measured to allow for the wooden blinds.  My box was 77" X 12" X 3 1/4".  I did some juggling at the office supply store to come up with the most economical strategy.

The boards are easily taped together with duct tape.   I did this to make the front long enough and also to attach the side pieces.

Once I had the length I needed, I spread out the batting and fabric together with the fabric being on the bottom and began stapling.

The pelmets are very light and Velcro tabs were strong enough to hold them in place.  I cut the tabs in half and placed them every two inches on the edge that attaches to the wall.

Once the pelmet box was installed, I glued the bias tape into place.  I found that bias tape was less expensive than ribbon or piping.  To make it cheaper, I cut it in half.

Pelmets can be any shape you want them to be.  I went with a straight line here because this is a room for boys.

2. Shelf Curtain
We keep all of the board games on this bookshelf.  To keep it from looking so messy and to hide the contents, I added this curtain to the front.

The fabric had kind of a retro Americana feel and I thought it would work nicely with the rest of the colors in the room, tying them all together.

This is perfect for someone who doesn't sew.  I found these clips at JoAnn's for around $1 and simply clipped them onto the fabric.  I turned the top down to make the curtain the right length and left the width.  Easy.
