In walks wall paper. I love wall paper for many reasons, but my favorite is for using it in unexpected places like here and here. If you pop into a wallpaper store, be sure to check the clearance bins. There is always an interesting pattern that you could use to line shelves or the linen closet.
To make these coasters look a little more current, I placed them on the wallpaper and traced the outline. Then I cut out the shapes. Using modge podge, I painted the surface of the coasters with a small brush and applied the wallpaper cuttings, smoothing out the bubbles with my fingers. Once this dried thoroughly, I applied three more coats to the top, drying in between coats. Once they were completely dry, I sprayed them with a protective coat of poly.

I have some cork backed ones that could use a change up. I don't have any wallpaper but perhaps scrapbook paper might work. Did you use just the regular mod podge? I've been wanting to use it on something!
ReplyDeleteI have seen this done with scrap book paper before. Having done a table with scrap paper, I will say that wallpaper was easier to work with. SB paper was more delicate and it ripped easily.

ReplyDeleteLove them! I was just at the wallpaper store yesterday hoping to find some grasscloth to line the back of my shelves like yours. No grasscloth in the clearance section but lots of other great deals. Wish I had seen this post yesterday morning. Saw that your chair made the cut in the CSI project (Kim's too). Congrats! My daughter just re-did a dresser...wish we had taken before and after pictures as it is GREAT but being new to all of this I didn't think of it.

ReplyDeleteI have some cork backed trivets about the size of a dinner plate that we received at our wedding shower 18 years ago! ~hello dated ;) They have a smooth top that would take wallpaper well and would cover the lovely PEACH flowers. I didn't want to get rid of them because they work well protecting the table from hot dishes at buffets. Thanks for the idea!

ReplyDeleteI use coasters...I decorate Country French. I found coasters at Pierre Deux with toile on them so they are perfect. But if I ever need to create some, I will definately do this.

ReplyDeleteI need to start rethinking about wallpaper, you have great ideas! I banished it from my life after I had to remove some not-so-pretty wallpaper from my bathroom when we moved in. However, using it in small pieces like that would be fun! They are so many great patterns!

ReplyDeleteOkay, I'm trying this right now with some scrapbook paper. They have lots of bubbles!! I am on the first top coat. I will let them dry longer and see if they go away. I'm doubting it. What did I do wrong?
ReplyDeleteI find scrap paper to be thin and difficult to work with. Wallpaper worked like a charm. Do you have a small rolling pin or something to get the bubbles out with? I have also heard of using a needle to prick a tiny hole so that the extra MP and air can escape. Good luck.
