I love what she has done with this stairway. The gallery, the lantern, the Greek key runner, and the super large image on the opposing wall. Be still my heart.
Here is my stairway. Almost identical no? Never did I consider hanging a lantern there. Our upstairs has low ceilings and at the top of the landing there is a builder grade flush mount fixture. Yuckola. Good news...Mr. says that when it gets cooler that he can move the box over the stairs and we will be able to hang a lantern. We have tons of photos that I would love to add to this space and I want to find the perfect one to enlarge on the opposing wall. And I'm on the hunt for a runner. Any suggestions of where to look for budget friendly runners?
Recently the trend has been to paint the rail black. What say you...black or white?

I love when you see a photo and inspiration radiates from it! Your hall is so similar to the photo. I would paint the bannister white first. Have fun decorating..Sinead
ReplyDeleteok. first off, i love that photo... great inspiration for YOUR stairwell. A lantern would be perfect!
ReplyDeletehmmmm..... black or white. i generally always say white.... but i'm thinking black!!
Ooooo, I can see why your heart skipped a beat! A lantern would be oh so pretty! Our staiway is on the bottom of the list at the moment! Thanks for the inspiration! --Gretchen O.
ReplyDeleteWas so excited I didn't read bottom of post...I have seen dash and albert runners used on stairs, and they aren't super expensive. would be NICE, and we have black railings...jumping on the trend wagon! --G
ReplyDeleteThat looks a lot like our stairs too! I was just thinking of hanging a huge piece in that same spot. My light is at the top and is a flush mount boob light. Not really attractive. Never thought of moving it. I have absolutely nothing on the walls right now. See, now you got me veering off on another project!
ReplyDeleteI know Anita. Mr. thinks that his life would be a lot easier without blogs and glossy magazines, tee-hee.

Yes, this is perfect inspiration! I have been dying to use a Dash & Albert runner too, on my back stairs. Black or white handrail depends on the color of the rug you end up with and your picture frames, I think.
ReplyDeleteSounds like some great changes are going to be made. I want to paint my rails darker or black. I think black on rails looks so good.
ReplyDeleteA black rail would certainly pop and tie in with the front door hardware. Great inspiration stairway that really is so much like yours! Janell
ReplyDeleteWow they are so similar. I would say paint it whatever stays the cleanest! That lantern is just perfection!!!!
ReplyDeleteLuvs!
I always love when my husband gets on board an idea I've been wanting to do!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the photo idea. And I'd use black frames. They really add a great border to a picture.
As far as the rail... I think that I am outnumbered, but I'd paint it white. If you paint it black it will call attention to it and I think fight with the artwork you will put up.
A lantern would look great, and bring so much style to that area.
When you find out about a reasonably priced runner let me know. A new runner on my stairs is a project for next summer. As well as new artwork.
Great inspiration!

~*A lantern will look so pretty~*~ I would paint the rail white first and then wait a few days and see how you like it..then black if white doesnt tickle your fancy!!~~*~ Rachel ;)
ReplyDeleteVery inspiring space -- and your stairs are perfectly suited to a similar look. Try IKEA for runners. You can always string together several smaller rugs as well, which might be less expensive and more customizable size-wise.
ReplyDeleteConnecting runners or rugs is a terrific idea Averill. Thanks!
ReplyDelete-Rene
Crazy how similar they both are! I recently found Johns Journal blog and I love it too! I say once you decide on the lantern, frames and runner then let the banister speak to you!!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking black. It will go with the black and white photos.
ReplyDeleteI vote black railing! Thanks so much for the comment on my blog! We are nothing if not real right?!
ReplyDelete-Lindsey
I love seeing pictures on stairways! I wish I had a beautiful one like yours, I have so may pictures!
ReplyDeleteI would say black on the rail. And a lantern would look so great there! Does Overstock have any runners? Have fun shopping!
Another fun option- 3 or 4 very large black and white family photos - artistic - (i.e. not just family standing in front of the Christmas tree:)
ReplyDeleteLess is more some times...

I love yours the way it is, but I agree that a lantern would be beautiful up there. And I'm all about a black hand rail.
ReplyDeletei am a white girl... seems to be timeless... this is such a great idea... i love lighting on stairwells.
ReplyDeletei love your blog... so happy to have found you. xx pam
Hi Rene, I'd go with a super glossy white on the rail. I love the idea of the large image on the center wall, that's a great look.
ReplyDeleteLove the stairway!
ReplyDeleteWe are gonna start our stairway renovation in Jan..I have lots of ideas but I'm still trying to decide black or white too!! I love them both!!
love maria and everything she does. Your space is so close to it:) Dash and Albert are responsibly priced and lovely.
ReplyDeleteOne of the reasons I love blogging! So much inspiration out there...I love this idea!
ReplyDeleteI say paint the railing black.
Hi Rene!
ReplyDeleteI have recently removed wallpaper and repainted my stairwell. With out the patterned paper, the walls looks a little stark. I just purchased a large canvas and my artsy daughter is in the process of painting a still life for me.
I have enjoyed perusing your blog here ~ nice!
Thanks much for stopping by my place and leaving your comment!
Kindly, ldh
Rene, you are so sweet honey!! your stairway really is identical, i too thought about painting the railway either black or dark walnut to match our hardwoods. yours will look stunning either way, i basically just hoped the gallery and runner would distract from the rail!!! can't wait to see yours and thanks for the shout out, dear!!!
