Black It Is

Thanks to everyone who counseled me last Friday.  Whew.  At one point in the day, the score was tied, 8-8.  Yes I was keeping score the way Mr. watches his fantasy football updates.  Then suddenly black made a surge and pulled out ahead of gray.  Thankfully just as I was about to leap into oncoming traffic, my published friend Kat spoke up like Kazoo, Fred Flinstone's conscience and said:

Here's my 2 cents, for months now you've been showing us drool worthy photos of bathrooms with black walls. It is the look you have in your head and I think that if you don't at least "try" the black walls...(you can always repaint them gray if you don't like the look)...you will always wonder if you should have gone with black!

Sure it will be a little dark, but it will be dramatic too and I "think" that is what you love about the whole black bathroom concept. And you just need to find the right black that will work....

Many of you agreed with Kat.  Thanks ya'll!  And to those who disagreed, sorry to disappoint, but thank you just the same for sharing your opinion.  I love blogging for this reason, among many.

Here is the update.  I have glossy BM black, the truest black there is.  Erica recommended that I go glossy to continue the flow of the black tile and I agree.  Today I will sand and paint.  These glossy walls must be smooth or every flaw will show.  The blue and white shower curtain was not working so I returned it.  For now we will use our white curtain.  By the way, has anyone tried the 84" shower curtain from Target?  It has received mixed reviews and has shrinkage issues so I'm a little leery.

Oh and did anyone notice the red and white striped rug in the first image?  I posted a while back about red striped rugs and they really do add a little "bam", no?  It does look nice with the clean black and white.

Enjoy your day.  I'm off to sand...

  1. I think it is going to look great! I wanted to paint our powder room black, but there are no windows in there and we have hardwood. I think with your tile it is going to look so classic~

  6. I think glossy black is the way to go for black. That way it will pop and light will reflect off of it. Can't wait to see it completed.

  7. So glad you're going with the glossy black - it'll be fab. And love the striped rug in red. Actually, any color striped rug would look cool, yellow, bright blue...

  9. Aww, I loved that little green guy from the Flintstones! And I didn't tell you anything you didn't already know...black was your first love!

I can't wait to see it, and I think a striped rug would be perfect in there and provide you with a beautiful pop of color! I will keep my eyes out for a cool shower curtain, I don't know anything about the Target one.

    Happy painting!

    Kat :)

  10. Glad you are giving the black a go as that was your first choice. I have used the waffle curtain from target though it wasn't the extra long one and it did shrink. So, maybe the x-long one would be better. I would just avoid the dryer. I really did like it.

  13. I have that shower curtain and I really love how it looks in the bath - more expensive than it was. It definitely shrank up a good 2-3" when I washed it (but now it's the perfect length for my bath).

I have painted bathrooms in glossy paint before, and I have found that the steam leaves visible streaks if the bath isn't vented properly. I will be curious to hear what happens with your space!

  15. I voted for grey but I do agree completely with your friend. If that's the vision you've had you won't be happy until you try it. I really think it will look great with all the white you have in the room. Can't wait to see the finished product!

  19. Prep is definitely the key. We have a navy blue eggshell bathroom with old plaster and you can see every bump. I will likely repaint in a year or so but I do LOVE the dark color.

  23. I so glad you decided to listen to that little voice in your gut (okay, it was Kat ... but anyway), if you see black in your imagination, black is the obvious choice. Besides, it doesn't matter what color we paint a dark room ... it will still be dark whether it's black, or gray, or white. Embrace the dark and make it beautiful. Can't wait to see the results of all your hard work.

  24. How fun Rene, I can't wait to see it painted. Glad to hear you went with a BM paint, it really is the best, esp. for a dark color.
I'm loving black so much...I did a little chalkboard painting last night and was walking around looking for something else to do. Didn't find anything.
    Love the new design btw.
