There was once a time when I lusted after cobalt blue glass. I used to scour thrift stores, yard sales, and flea markets in search of it. One day I decided - no more cobalt, so out it went. Over the weekend Mr. and I wandered into a vintage store and voila, a set of six cobalt wine goblets. My heart pitter pattered a bit. My eyes went right to Mr. and he shook his head. He knew what I was thinking. Should have kept what I had.

Have you ever gotten rid of something only to regret it later? Do tell.

Oh several times! Just last weekend I took a piece to my booth because my mr said that this new piece was a better piece... made anyhow.... I miss the old piece!
ReplyDeletedid you buy the cobalt wine glasses? I would have :)
love cobalt blue!
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly identify with this! Though I have been jokingly accused of being a hoarder, there are times when I regret having given away my collection of pink Depression glass. Remember back in the 80's when Depression glass was popular (but prices were reasonable)? Over the years, my taste changed, and the glass collection was packed away and moved at least twice without coming out of the box. I gave it to a dear friend, with an active collection, so I know it's in a good home now. That doesn't keep me from missing it, tho.
ReplyDeleteVery rarely...I like clearing out the house on a regular basis of things that aren't be used often. I did get rid of one sweater years ago that for some odd reason I still think about and wish I hadn't given away. But mostly, if it doesn't have some sort of personal history, meaning, I'm strangely unattached to things.

p.s. it could be because my Dad keeps EVERYTHING and it drives me (and my mom!) crazy!
No, I didn't buy it, but I'm thinking that if my sidekick wasn't with me I would have :)
ReplyDeleteJanell, I am usually quick to get rid of things too. The only thing I struggle with is the boy's artwork and school projects. It's a little out of control.
Oh yes, lots of times!! I was just looking for a flannel gray and white duvet cover that we had when we first moved in, it was perfect! However, it is now perfect in someone elses home :(
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking of a couple of chairs that I wish we had kept. Would have been great upholstered. It seems as though right when I throw something out, I wish I still had it. But purging is a good thing too. Sais la vie:)

Hmm, the thing that comes to mind right now is a little espresso maker I used to have and I guess got tired of or was taking up too much space on the counter or in cabinets. I would kill for a cappuccino right now!
ReplyDeleteI come from a long line of keep everything'ers so I don't really think I've gotten rid of anything I miss. But I do wish my father, who did give things away and would sometimes go overboard with purging, hadn't gotten rid of my grandparents old silver pom pom Christmas tree! I loved that tree when I was little and it's hard to find the old ones in good condition, with a working color wheel and without them costing a fortune!
ReplyDeleteKat :)
Oh I know that feeling!!
ReplyDeleteI have given and sold away too much! But the hunt for new is a THRILL!!
ReplyDeleteLove the wall color, that table, vase with flowers and those pillows!
ReplyDeleteYes, I wished I had my white milk glass vases that I found at a flea market in Maryland. They use to hold my beautiful flowers from my previous garden. Peonies, roses and hydrangeas.
So happy to hear you found some cobalt blue goblets!
That is my fear too, wanting something back...but living in a small cottage things have to go now and then. I was just thinking about doing a purge again.
ReplyDeleteThis is so funny, I do the same thing! I do love to purge my stuff every now and then. But there seems to be one thing that I always end up wondering why I gave it up.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it's really hard to know what to save and what to purge. I've had many times when I've wished I hadn't parted with something. I just keep reminding myself that I can't keep everything!
ReplyDelete~*~Yes..I had a veryl early 1900s wooden snow sled from Germany that had the best old wooden patina and then I sold it at a garage sale for $30 and found MY sled a few days later at the local antique store for $300!!! The lady who bought it from me was a dealer and pretended she was low on cash and really wanted it to decorate her entryway..UGH!! I am still a little upset..LOl..;)Rachel~*~*
ReplyDeleteOh, I've been afraid something like that would happen to me as I've downsized and gotten rid of so much over the past 4 years of living in apartments again and I just know that it's going to happen to me just like that when I walk into a thrift or antique store and see something that harkens back to one of my old collections. I wonder if I was in your position if I would have purchased the glasses. oh probably.:) Well, those cobalt blue pieces are so pretty.
ReplyDeleteRachel, I'm upset now too! What's her name? No one sell to the antique dealer who appears to be low on cash,OK?
ReplyDeletei love a good cleansing and getting rid of things! i can't think of anything in particular i have gotten rid of and then regretted, but i know there have been times! maybe i have blocked those painful memories of sorrow and regret. ;)
ReplyDeleteI keep holding on to my cobalt blue because it was my dad's favorite and besides the pretty color it has sentimental value to me. People are always telling me it's no longer in fashion(I have the real old cobalt-so I don't listen to that reason)and I should get rid of it. I can't! And now I see it used everywhere. It's very fashionable again. I have given up other things and regretted doing so. I guess that's why I hang on to the cobalt... besides, I love it. I wish you still had yours too.
ReplyDeleteOh I do the same thing! I hate to keep extra stuff! I so kick myself!!
ReplyDeleteLuvs!
I got rid of my fabric pumpkins last year. This year they're all over blog land. Frown.
ReplyDeleteSo true!!! I don't know how many times that has happened to me!
ReplyDeleteOH, I've done it a thousand times only to kick myself later.I'm with you, keep it,stash it and remember where you put it because I always forget where I stored it..xx
ReplyDeleteWhen I get tired of things I give them to my sisters. That way they are not truly gone :)
ReplyDeleteSherry, that is a great idea! My mom and I do that too. It drives our husbands crazy :)
ReplyDeleteYES. In my newlywed
ReplyDeleteyears when I mentioned
to my MIL that I was
starting a tea cup collection,
she gave me several Lusterware
ones my FIL had brought back
from Japan after WWII. They
weren't the chintz type that
I liked at that time and when
we moved I gave them to Good
Will! Well, I've since felt
bad about that and recently
{at GW!}I found very similar
ones which I bought on the spot.
Now I can bring them out when
my MIL is here and offer her a
cup of tea in them....and hope
she doesn't realize they aren't
the orginials : ) The funny thing
is, I now really like Lusterware.
So, yes, don't pitch willy-nilly!
xx Suzanne
Oh yes, too many things! One was my blue and white pieces in a large collection. I did keep some of the plates and platters for my wall...but other collectibles took their place so maybe it's a good thing???....
ReplyDeleteJust popped in to say Kudos for your walking this weekend. Read it over at Suzanne's. You are a Warrior Sister! Rah! Stay Strong.
Hugs across the NC miles.
