At long last, here is my black bathroom. If you have been following along, providing counseling along the way, thank you. Once you see it, you may wonder why it took me so long. The reason - there is none. It just did.
To back track a bit, our bathroom has black and white tile original to our 1930's house. I have always wanted to paint the walls black and finally took the leap a couple of months ago. Also, I found this little soap dish and absolutely had to use it in this room and somehow tie blue into the decor.
One solution was to add a metal box to the toilet tank to hold all of my girl junk. I found this box at Garden Ridge and it was an ugly rusty blah color. I painted it blue and love it. Originally, I had made this tray to go in this spot, but felt that blue worked better.
A while back, I posted a teaser about the bathroom progress and showed black and white photos for artwork. I lived with this for a while and felt that the bathroom needed more color and particularly more blue. So I went to my favorite place for free art and found a few images.
Here you see a bit of the shower curtain. I decided to go with this curtain from Target and am so glad to have read the comments because it shrinks - big time. I bought an extra long length, thankfully.
All of the frames that you see were black and I spray painted them in glossy white. They really pop against the black walls.
A friend of mine here in Greensboro did the monogramming. I highly recommend Thurl's Threads for all of your monogramming needs. She can be contacted by email, thurl01@gmail.com
To create a seamless look, I painted all of the switch plates and vent glossy black.
Note to self, dust things before taking pictures.
Paint color: Benjamin Moore, Black (it took less than a quart to cover the walls) One coat gave complete coverage. LOVE.

Ooooh. These photos make me stare. Such a lovely transformation!
ReplyDeleteLove how you used the existing tile, etc in your bathroom. The black walls and blue accents are incredible and you have maintained the original charm of the space, Nice job!
ReplyDeleteRene, it looks amazing! I am a little nervous about black walls, but they are perfect for a bathroom since they aren't rooms where you spend hours at a time.
ReplyDeleteI love that the black gives an updated look to the tiles. My grandparents had black and white tiles in their bathroom when I was growing up and looking at your room, I can almost imagine what it would look like if they had painted those walls black (instead of the sickening Pepto Bismol pink!)
Rene, it looks amazing! I am still looking for one big shot so I can take in the whole room, but I do love your closeups. Great job. The black really was the right way to go--it just works so seamlessly with the black and white tile and has such drama. I love it! You're making me want to paint stuff asap.
ReplyDeleteIt really looks great Rene. I love the white frames against the wall. It amazes me that it only took one coat of paint!
ReplyDeleteRene, I love the black. Really makes all your white accessories pop. I love BM paint and will not use Sherwin Williams again. Took me 4 coats to repaint my inside doors. Benjamin Moore covers so well and uses so much less paint even though hubby complains about the cost. Hey, I am the one painting, not him. Love the monograms on the towels. Much better that what you can get done at PB or Ballards.
ReplyDeleteThanks everybody. Casey, I added one more photo capturing as much of the room as possible. It is so hard to take pictures of a tiny space.

Rene, I really like it! And, I love how you incorporated blue. I know a lot of people don't like black & blue together, but I do. You're so lucky to have the original B & W tiles - so charming! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThe tiles are in perfect condition, how lucky! The black walls are perfectly dramatic for this room. It's beautiful! Oh and I love anything with a monogram, perfect touch.
ReplyDeleteso chic! it's gorgeous. well done.
ReplyDeletewow, it looks amazing. i would love to have a black bathroom, so sophisticated!
ReplyDeleteVERY chic!!!! Great job!
ReplyDeletei LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it a wonderful feeling to finally cross this project off your To Do list? You did a fabulous job, and everything looks so polished and put together! (I'm off to go work on dear Youngest Daughter's bathroom now ... where did I put my drywall knife?)
ReplyDeleteRene, your bathroom is all that and a bag of chips!! I love the artwork, the walls, the monogrammed towels (cool monogram btw!), and your shower curtain(I have the same one!)!! I love it when people find cool ways to update retro tiles and you certainly have brought your 1930's tiles into the 21st Century with style and pizazz!
ReplyDeleteKat :)
P.S Dusting is for bored people ;-)
So pretty Rene! It makes me miss my black&white bath from our last house - I loved my black walls with the checkered floor! Your touches are so lovely.
ReplyDeleteYou are brave! It looks great!
ReplyDelete-Trish
Looks sooo great, Rene! I love the blue that you tied in with the black and white! Bravo on making old tile look so modern and new!
ReplyDeleteLooks great. Curious about the Vintage Printables photos. Did you print them at home or at a kiosk? If at home, with photo paper or standard printer paper? Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteBrian, I printed them at home using a standard printer. I always use card stock grade paper so that it doesn't ripple over time and I like the texture. I hope this helps.
ReplyDelete-Rene
Oh Rene it turned out so beautiful! The black looks so chic and the blue just adds that pop of color, it all goes perfectly!! Love the artwork you picked and all your details are just perfect!!
ReplyDeleteSo Chic! I love it. Well done!
ReplyDeleteIt is just amazing. I love how you kept the integrity of the 1930s bathroom but made it so chic. I love that tin you painted for your "girly stuff" and that prints are perfect. So well done.
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I have the same shower curtain. :)
ReplyDeleteI knew it would be gorgeous!! You have such a great sense of style, I also love how you've coordinated the colors in all of your updated rooms.
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful, of course! Love everything about it. :)
ReplyDeleteoh. my. goodness. i. am. in. love. LOVE it rene! it is stunning. it looks to be about the same size as my one full bath- we have just a vanity to the left when you walk in, a toilet next to that, and then a shower/tub combo. we have all white tile on the walls, and then we changed the floor tile to black and white last year... i have a white shower curtain. this gets me thinking that i should paint mine black. i absolutely love it.
ReplyDeleteAmazing, Rene! It makes me want to do mine this way! Love the tiles and the apothecary jars!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
I'm a monogram fiend....love to see them in your bathroom.
ReplyDeleteI love how it turned out! Great idea to use blue to break up all the black and white, it was the perfect touch!
ReplyDeleteRene you have outdone yourself. It's fabulous. The wall color is such a bold statment and I love that you took the leap. Very Well Done.

ReplyDeleteRalph Lauren eat your heart out!!! Navy, black and white are so classic...it. just. works. period.
ReplyDeleteIt turned out great. I'm not usually a fan of blue but the shade you chose for the metal container is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteJust wonderful! I'm working on our new lavatory, which is not quite black, but BM "Mysterious": a dark, dark blue/black . Take a look at the work in progress:

The dark colors really do look great! I've had a dark, shiny green lav. in our present house for 25 years and get so many compliments on it.
And your towels are wonderful!
Wow! I really like it. I didn't think I would, but I totally do.
ReplyDeleteThis is right up my alley :)

ReplyDeleteI really love it!! I'm so pleased that you went with what you wanted. Sometimes everything is so samey in blogland. This is so different...and gorgeous too!! Go you!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it a nightmare taking photos in small rooms? I'm hoping to get a new camera with a wide-angle lens for Christmas which should help me a bit...although it might just show up how small some rooms really are!! Your shots have turned out really well though...I should add!
And monogrammed towels...errr, yes, please!
I love it - and I'm your new follower!
Sarahx
looks very "domino" - I think Lonny needs it.

ReplyDeleteHi Rene-
ReplyDeleteBlack can be a scary color to paint a room, but with the white tiles - your bathroom looks magazine worthy. Wow!
I also wanted to tell you I love your Christmas photos - even with "the teenager" wearing slippers. FAmily is what the holidays are all about.
My best- Diane
A lot of people would have been scared to paint black in a bathroom. Yours works! Thanks for sharing and your courage. Terry
