The paint came from Sherwin Williams. I know Kim has blogged about this before and many of you may already know this, but a quart of SW is only $5. If you register with SW, you get an additional 10% off every time you buy their paint. Not bad for little furniture projects when you are used to paying $10+ a quart. Also, they gave me the fan deck, key word, gave. I had to pay $12 for the BM fan deck. Yes, there is a small difference in quality, but again, small projects. The other thing I liked was this great little quart container with a handle on the side. This is so much easier to work with than the usual quart can. The only thing it lacks is the usual hardeners, so a protective topcoat is recommended.
Can you see the scratches on our kitchen floors? Grrr.
About the hardware...if you like old brass and want to preserve what you have, it cleans easily with Twinkle. I have also used Bar Keepers Friend, and it works, but after trying both, I prefer Twinkle. We found it at Lowes in the cleaning products aisle.
A couple of you asked about the white jar on the buffet. It didn't always look like this.
Inspired by the pretty bisque lamp bases in Ballard Designs, I decided to give mine a makeover. A coat of primer and a couple coats of white spray paint later, you see how it was transformed.
So, any big plans this weekend? Have a great one!!

Rene, I can't believe you spray painted your vase!! Love it! So cool! You know...your buffet was another thing I was inspired by this week! Seriously, I plan to use that color somewhere in my house! Love it!
ReplyDeletei meant to comment yesterday and the day got away from me - i love the color and the piece. As for SW - I love their paint - i'm debating their color "ancient marble" for our bath right now.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you shared these 5 things with us..l will have to try the foam brush, there are a few or 5 things that need painting around here!
ReplyDelete--Gretchen O.
I used "five" loosely Getchen. I sort of rambled a lot...could be more than five.

Thanks for all the tips. The color on your buffet is just perfect. And I had heard you could paint a vase but I guess I didn't really believe it. Yours looks just great. I will give it a try now.
ReplyDeletethat jar is so great - I love what spray paint can do!
ReplyDeleteAwesome vase! Too cool! Great tip about SW paint - I will have to go talk to my local store and attempt to get a free fan deck. Have a nice weekend.

I had heard that about the hardeners, but wasn't sure it was true. I guess that is why my table I am working on now needs a primer on the top. I thought I was through and I set the lamp on it and I have two scratches so I am going to redo the top only. I haven't had any problems with any of my other projects though. Maybe I didn't sand the top coat off enough before painting. I get in a hurry. Love that chest and especially the color you chose. Have a good one!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that it didn't have hardeners in it. Just the samples or all SW paint? I should probably top coat my legs then. Well, my table legs.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I had to pay like $20 for my BM paint deck!
Anita, It is only the quart/samples that don't have hardeners. The clerk told me this when I purchased it and it is written on the can. The sample finish is satin which is fine for furniture, but for a surface, you might need a protective topcoat. Kim, you used it in the back of a cabinet which is probably fine w/o protection.
ReplyDeleteYes, Anita, paint your legs girl, ahem, your table legs that is :) $20??? Not nice.

Great information, I've yet to use foam rollers with success, I need a lesson from you! LOVE the vase, its shape and color are just right placed here on the cabinet!
ReplyDeleteJanell
I have never painted furniture with a foam brush... I will surely try it. thanks for the tip. ;) love the jar. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat tips, Rene. I had no idea about SW being so inexpensive--but also having to finish with a topcoat. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteoh that vase is great painted white. I have a similar one that I no longer like the paint style of. {I loved seeing someone else with scratches on their wood floors. . .makes me feel much better about mine!} have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteI am still loving that color and I love the makeover you did with your jar, it really pops on the new buffett!
ReplyDeletei have an acct at my local sherwin williams and i love it. plus the people there are so friendly. thanks for the "twinkle" tip- i have never tried that!
ReplyDeleteI have about 8 of those little quarts from Sherwin Williams in varying shades of green from when I was trying to decide what color to paint my house. I remarked to the paint guy...well...at least I'll have lots of paint to use on projects around the house. And he told me that those $5 quarts are not to be painted with that they don't have binders in them to make them stick. He said they were to only be used as testers for color and not to be used for actual painting.
ReplyDeleteHe said that is why they are much faster to mix up than real paint because they don't have the binders in them. I don't know. All I know is I have a bunch of unusable paint around here.
One of which looks to be the color you used.
love that vase! I've been on a bit of a spray painting spree myself...
ReplyDeleteI love the jar!!!! I have a vase that I got as a wedding gift that no longer matches our decor. Now I'm thinking maybe I can paint it. Would you share with us how you did it? Or just email me. We have heart of pine floors & it scratches really easily. People keep telling me it adds character so I'm going with that!!
ReplyDeleteI used SW for my little bench, and the quality was great. I forgot to mention that in my post. Also, you're so right on the foam brushes! Why don't we use these for everything? The finish is crazy smooth! I did the same thing for my ginger jars from my Master Bedroom! Aren't we a couple of smart girls now?
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing what kind of paint you used and that you can register with them to get a discount! Usually, the paint I buy for my furniture ends up costing more than the furniture piece did!! I will have to try SW! The buffet and the decorations put together create a very soft look, I love it!
ReplyDeleteLove the paint color.
ReplyDeleteThe buffet is gorgoeus and the rosemary color is perfect for it. It looks so sleek and chic! The white jar and dishes are very striking on it. I need to give a foam roller a try when I paint. It gives such a smooth, flawless look to the finish.
ReplyDeleteRene, I love the buffet color, so pretty! Lezlee
ReplyDeleteHey lovely Rene!
ReplyDeleteI'm wrapping up
my quick trip to
paradise and heading
home, tomorrow.....
Loved all of the
details, here. The
quart container is
brilliant and the
rec for Twinkle is
much appreciated, as
I've always been a
BF user, instead.
Hope you are enjoying
your weekend!
xx Suzanne
Wow! The white jar on the buffet looks completely different! Beautiful!
ReplyDeletehappy Sunday evening :-)
ReplyDeleteOh, great tips!! Keep them coming!!
ReplyDeleteLisa
Have you seen the cover of the new Veranda magazine - your vase!! Wonder if they used your tip? :)
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you painted that jar. It looks fabulous! The towels are wonderful...you are so creative. I have been playing catch-up again and reading the posts I've missed. I love that buffet. I remember the original post and it has come a long way, baby! Beautiful color and the brass is perfect. I grew up using twinkle at home on all our copper pieces. There's nothing like it! I also really like Bar Keepers but really prefer Twinkle. So glad you reminded me to pick up a jar. Your posts are always so creative and inspiring. You are also funny and it's always great to visit your blog!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Are you still liking your painted floors?
can you tell me the color of the SW paint-love it!
ReplyDeleteHi Jarrie. The color is rosemary.
