The paint came from Sherwin Williams. I know Kim has blogged about this before and many of you may already know this, but a quart of SW is only $5. If you register with SW, you get an additional 10% off every time you buy their paint. Not bad for little furniture projects when you are used to paying $10+ a quart. Also, they gave me the fan deck, key word, gave. I had to pay $12 for the BM fan deck. Yes, there is a small difference in quality, but again, small projects. The other thing I liked was this great little quart container with a handle on the side. This is so much easier to work with than the usual quart can. The only thing it lacks is the usual hardeners, so a protective topcoat is recommended.
Can you see the scratches on our kitchen floors? Grrr.
About the hardware...if you like old brass and want to preserve what you have, it cleans easily with Twinkle. I have also used Bar Keepers Friend, and it works, but after trying both, I prefer Twinkle. We found it at Lowes in the cleaning products aisle.
A couple of you asked about the white jar on the buffet. It didn't always look like this.
Inspired by the pretty bisque lamp bases in Ballard Designs, I decided to give mine a makeover. A coat of primer and a couple coats of white spray paint later, you see how it was transformed.

I had heard that about the hardeners, but wasn't sure it was true. I guess that is why my table I am working on now needs a primer on the top. I thought I was through and I set the lamp on it and I have two scratches so I am going to redo the top only. I haven't had any problems with any of my other projects though. Maybe I didn't sand the top coat off enough before painting. I get in a hurry. Love that chest and especially the color you chose. Have a good one!

Anita, It is only the quart/samples that don't have hardeners. The clerk told me this when I purchased it and it is written on the can. The sample finish is satin which is fine for furniture, but for a surface, you might need a protective topcoat. Kim, you used it in the back of a cabinet which is probably fine w/o protection.

ReplyDeleteoh that vase is great painted white. I have a similar one that I no longer like the paint style of. {I loved seeing someone else with scratches on their wood floors. . .makes me feel much better about mine!} have a great weekend.

ReplyDeleteI have about 8 of those little quarts from Sherwin Williams in varying shades of green from when I was trying to decide what color to paint my house. I remarked to the paint guy...well...at least I'll have lots of paint to use on projects around the house. And he told me that those $5 quarts are not to be painted with that they don't have binders in them to make them stick. He said they were to only be used as testers for color and not to be used for actual painting.
ReplyDeleteHe said that is why they are much faster to mix up than real paint because they don't have the binders in them. I don't know. All I know is I have a bunch of unusable paint around here.

Or just email me. We have heart of pine floors & it scratches really easily. People keep telling me it adds character so I'm going with that!!
ReplyDeleteI used SW for my little bench, and the quality was great. I forgot to mention that in my post. Also, you're so right on the foam brushes! Why don't we use these for everything? The finish is crazy smooth! I did the same thing for my ginger jars from my Master Bedroom! Aren't we a couple of smart girls now?

ReplyDeleteI can't believe you painted that jar. It looks fabulous! The towels are wonderful...you are so creative. I have been playing catch-up again and reading the posts I've missed. I love that buffet. I remember the original post and it has come a long way, baby! Beautiful color and the brass is perfect. I grew up using twinkle at home on all our copper pieces. There's nothing like it! I also really like Bar Keepers but really prefer Twinkle. So glad you reminded me to pick up a jar. Your posts are always so creative and inspiring. You are also funny and it's always great to visit your blog!
