Master Mind
As soon as the pine-cones and tinsel settle, I would like to begin working on the master bedroom. I put a few ideas together mostly using what I have. The only thing I will need is a trellis fabric for a bed skirt and bolster pillow and a fresh coat of gray on the walls. We have a poster bed that Dad made, (which I adore) but it is quite difficult when it comes to bed skirts. Have you ever made a bed skirt using a tension rod? I'm thinking this might be the way to go - a rod on each side and one at the foot. Any thoughts?

Love the colors! As for the bedskirt, I'd probably figure out a way to attach the lengths to the inside of the bedframe side rails and not even bother with the expanse of fabric across the width of the bed. (I've been very happy with my unorthodox approach, it's working!)

Janell, would you please come to Greensboro just for me? You would probably be the best one for this job :) I agree, fabric across the expanse would be a waste.

Oooh, I'm loving the design. Do you need a bedskirt at all? Just a thought--more modern feeling to not have one, if you can get away with it.
ReplyDeleteRene - I have an old bed that was my husband's great-grandparents' bed. I don't use a skirt. Here is a photo:

Some beds look great without a skirt (especially with hardwoods).
Good luck!

I think your bed is probably so lovely, you wouldn't even need a bedskirt - however, I do LOVE the fabric you picked out! I will be excited to see how it all turns out, either way!
ReplyDeleteTrish your bed is gorgeous and you clearly aren't the hoarder that I am :) We keep all of he gift wrap boxes under the bed so I kind of need to have something to hide it all.

Rene,
ReplyDeleteI used tension rods on my daughters dust ruffle. I couldn't find rods the size we needed in the store so you may need to order them.
It is much easier because all you need to do is fold twice and run a seem to run the rod through.
Have a nice day.

Rene, when we had a poster bed very high off the floor, I used velcro and attached fabric directly to the inside frame and then layered another regular cheap bedskirt over that to cover up the visible frame. It worked great. Can't wait to see your room redo.
ReplyDeleteWhy not sticky velcro on the bedskirt - just as you would do a sink skirt? Another option. I'd love to see that fabric on draperies.
ReplyDeleteOh I just love that fabric. So excited to see the room come together. Is there a box spring? I am thinking of literally sewing the skirt {just the strips of fabric} to my daughters fitted sheet that I put over a box spring. Does that make any sense {so both the mattress and box spring have fitted sheets.
ReplyDeleteI have also had a similar problem. We found the best solution was Velcro, like Kim@SavySouthernStyle said. I don't remember having to use two bedskirts though. I guess it would depend on the exact fit of your bedframe and boxspring. Ours fit tightly so we were ablt to place the velcro on the inside of the bed rails and the bedskirt always laid flush.
ReplyDeleteLoving that fabric for the bedskirt, Rene. I cut the ruffles off a bedskirt and actually stapled it to the inside of the wooden bedframe in my daughter's room. Considering that your bed was made my your dad and is a beautiful piece of furniture, maybe stapling is not the way to go though. I like the velcro idea.
ReplyDeleteI love all your choices. It is definitely my style!
ReplyDeleteLove it! I actually have that trellis fabric in my master bedroom! It's just acting as backing for some art, for now, but I also want to do a pillow with it. Like you said, though, after Christmas when we all have a little bit more time on our hands!! :)
ReplyDeleteI was going to say velcro is what I have used before...and I see that a couple of others recommended it as well. But what ever you do I definitely agree that it shouldn't span the width of the bed...I think they just stay tidier looking if they are attached around the perimeter. good luck, Rene! Can't wait to see you work your magic!
ReplyDeleteCan you give us the source of the clear lamps? I have been looking for some just like this one!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your help everybody! Maybe I will try Velcro because I have to be able to "squirrel" things under the bed. Allison, here is the link, but I'm sure you can find some in the US (for less).

Love all your ideas! We have a four-poster bed as well and I need a bedskirt. I never though about the tension rods or velcro! Great ideas! I might have to look into that!
ReplyDeletei am not great with bed skirts- sorry! just wanted to say i love the choices you have made, and the rich wood will give it the warmth it needs. i actually think a teensy pop of yellow maybe in a pillow or painting would be nice, too.
ReplyDeleteCassie, so funny you say that about yellow because I was considering it as well.

I can't sew so I had to buy my bed skirt. And our bed is very much like yours, so I am always storing things under!! It's like having an extra closet! lol!

So glad I'm not alone in thinking about where I'm taking the house after the holidays. Those cold winter months that keep us close to home always have my nesting instincts in full swing.
ReplyDeletePam
yes...yes...and more yes!!! I love your choices:)
ReplyDeletePlease include me in your "stuff under the bed" club! I would be lost without that storage space. I think velcro might be the way to go. Your bed is gorgeous! I love all the pieces. Can't wait to see what you decide about the bedskirt.
ReplyDeleteI wish I hadn't just trimmed my boxwood a couple of weeks ago. I would have loved to make your wreath. It's gorgeous!
