(Our son asked why my hair looked like this. I told him that back then "chi" was not a household name.)
It is hard to believe we have been married twenty years today. Our wedding caused a bit of a stir in my little home town. Even though I tend to be fairly traditional, I have always marched to my own beat. Small towns notice things like unusual wedding cakes (we ordered carrot cake), wedding bouquets that aren't the norm (I carried Dad's favorite flower, the calla lily). We wanted to have a small wedding in the chapel of my church by candle light. At the time, this was unheard of, but we pulled it off and it was the beautiful, intimate wedding we had hoped for. All things considered, we had a good day...until the reception.
At the reception, we discovered that despite what our travel agent told us, we needed either a birth certificate or a passport to get into Jamaica. So we left the party in the 1990 Ford Festiva otherwise known as "the skate", headed back to my apartment in Charlotte and proceeded to tear the place apart looking for my birth certificate.
After many phone calls and finally locating our documents, we left for Jamaica a day later. When we arrived, it was pouring down rain and we felt like our honeymoon was doomed. The next day though, we awoke in our ocean front suite and looked out to a beautiful rainbow over the ocean. The rest of the week was wonderful.
I hesitated to share this with you, but decided to anyway, hoping it is not too offensive...
Mr. forgot to pack his underpants, so each day before we headed to the pool, he would wash his only pair in the sink and leave them hanging on the ceiling fan to dry. I would love to know what the maids were thinking when they came in to clean the room each day :)

We had a red velvet wedding cake and i'm sure some thought it gaudy to cut into a beautiful fondant wedding cake to see a sea of red. LOL. I'm glad you did what your heart desired - that's the purpose of a wedding, no? And the underwear thing made me smile :)
ReplyDeleteYou were rocking the big hair, girl!!!! Your wedding sounds like it was a beautiful time to start your new life together, oh and the air dried underpants...refreshing! LOL
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary!!!!
congrats rene! and i think the underwear story makes it!!! when we were on our honeymoon, i worked out but only brought a couple sports bras, thinking i could wash them... well it was a nice hotel with no laundry provided for guests to do their own, so i had to "get it cleaned". they cleaned and pressed my fym socks and sports bra.... i mean they were starched!!!! and when we got the bill, i was so glad we were still honeymooning or i may have been in for it!
ReplyDeleteRene,
ReplyDeleteThis is such a sweet story.
Happy ANniversary!

haha! That's wonderful! Aren't you glad your wedding (and your cake) weren't vanilla? Your choices made it so unique. My sister-in-law went into labor right after our reception. Crazy!! Congrats on the 20 years! May you be blessed with many many more!

Happy Anniversary! I find that the little hiccups, and when "things don't go quite right" are the times that makes them more memorable. Funny about the "Mr." forgetting his pants. Pretty Handsome Guy forgot his swim trunks and towel on a week's trip to the beach. Not sure how you forget those ;-D.

ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary Rene! What a lovely bride you were! That is so funny about the "unmentionables" - I'm sure you had lots of laughs at that memory throughout the years! Wishing you and the Mr. many more years of happiness together!! xoxLisa
ReplyDeleteHappy 20th Anniversary Rene! 1991 was a good year for weddings, we celebrate our 20th in September and I do believe I had a similar "do"!!! Love that you shared the side story, and think you should add the tradition of new undies as an anniversary gift each year. Enjoy your celebration and may you have more than 20 additional years together.
ReplyDeleteCathy
Happy Anniversary to you and yours, It's a beautiful thing in life when two people are together for so long, To another 20 years...Have a good day

ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary! The wedding sounds as if it was beautiful, and I like the idea of carrot cake. Yum!
ReplyDelete& I'm glad you shared the underwear story because it made me laugh, but I am a housekeeper, and I'm pretty sure I would think "ok, these have got to be some strange people" if I went in to clean a room with undies on the ceiling fan! haha
-Many Smiles!
What a beautiful couple! (I love your hair) :) The underpants story made me laugh...that sounds like a typical guy. Happy Anniversary!

Happy Anniversary! That's a great story about the underwear. Hope your husband doesn't read your blog :)
ReplyDeleteMary Ann
PS Love your curly hair.
Congratulations! I also marched (much to the chagrin of my MIL and others) to the beat of a different drummer. We hired a pianist to play "send in the clowns" as opposed to the wedding march. I thought it was entertaining.
ReplyDeleteI hope you celebrate with something special planned.

Love the old school pic! Congratulations on 20 years!
ReplyDeleteHappy 20th Anniversary!
ReplyDeleteBe blessed with 50 more!!!
Happy 20th! Our wedding cake was strawberry because that's my favorite cake in the world. My mom thought I was nuts, but it was MY wedding and that's what I wanted. James Bond didn't care. It was all about the honeymoon for him. ;) It will be 16 years in March, and I rocked the curly, puffy hair too.
ReplyDeleteHa! What a funny story!! Congratulations on 20 years! Time sure does fly - we'll be celebrating 13 this May and I still feel like I just graduated college (it was 15 years ago.) Here's to many more happy years together!! Cheers!
ReplyDeleteTessa
Look at you guys! Such a cool picture! Happy Anniversary! Love that you added in the part about the underwear...too funny!!

ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary! I loved your story, esp the part about the underwear! HILARIOUS! I love that you didnt follow the rules, I didnt either and boy was my MIL NOT PLEASED. I had chocolate cake and she said NO I told her IM eating it not her. I had black bridesmades dresses and she nearly had a heart attack, we had no flowers for the bridesmaids either or at the hall (it was an asian theme) come to think of it we really rocked the boat at our wedding (so much that i didnt talk to my inlaws for a year after :-(
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Have a HAPPY ANNIVERSARY
Happy Anniversary!! Sounds like you had a beautiful wedding. And the story was hilarious. Offensive? Oh please, not in the least! I would have loved to see the maids face too!

My dress was similar
