Gretchen recently added the Dash & Albert runner to her stairs and I love it!

This one has been around a while proving that good design is timeless.
I really like this modern country look. The worn bench, the cotton rug, and natural elements paired with the visual pop from the banister - a good balance of old/new in my opinion.

Please Renee, I don't need any encouragement in this area. :-) I saw something similar in one of my old Victoria Magazines and it planted a seed in head since my stairs are like that. Just beautiful.

Painting stair railings black is a lot like the old tradition of painting baseboards (aka., mopboards) black. It didn't show dirt and wear as much. Notice that the best of the designs you show have a railing that matches the stair treads? Provides balance and rhythm, I imagine.
ReplyDeleteI love, the black stair rail especially in the second image with the black front door- tre chic!
ReplyDeleteI'm so into accenting with black right now. Meaning, i'm drooling all over it....unfortunately, i'm not getting my rear in gear to do anything yet. Like the front door, which you know. I need more hours in the day, friend. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the shout out Rene:)...To be included with all of that beautiful black stairwell eye candy is an honor! Oh, and we went withOUT the stair rods. Hope you had a wonderful weekend.

Love this look--don't think I'll ever get tired of it. I know it would make a huge difference in our house but trying to decide if I want to invest the time and $$$. Hmmmmm.....
ReplyDeleteI love the Modern Country image too!! What a surprise!!
ReplyDeleteAnd the one with the black door is gorgeous too.
We're thinking of changing our staircase so have been thinking about exactly this issue: what bannister to use. Currently there's a hideous eighties version. Bleeeurgh!
I have visions of oak in my head but we'll see...

I love the look of black or dark railings, too and want to do it to mine, but that will be a major undertaking.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful images! Love the black railings! Beautiful and practical, too, since they don't get all grungy like white ones do. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to convince me, Rene. I've been wanting to paint my banister black for the longest time!! Love the look and your inspiration pics!
ReplyDeleteI love this! Sometimes it's the simple things that make the biggest difference in a home. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love this idea, It make it look so NOW such an easy fix for such BIG style
ReplyDeletePatie
i looooove the look of the ones with the white spindles and the black rail- the black really makes a nicelinear statement that way. have you been wokring on your black post and now your wheels are turning?
ReplyDeleteThese are great and so beautiful! I always wanted a stair case like these. It does make a big difference for a small change.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day Rene!
Such a classic and yet modern look! Love it...someday when my (stained) handrails are all worn and dinged I may just go for this look myself! Janell
ReplyDeleteI painted my stair rail black a couple of years ago and I love it. So much that I painted the treads black too !
ReplyDeleteI just love these stairs! Black and white together make my heart sing!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post!
Yvonne
Scrolling through the pics I kept thinking, "Oh my goodness, she painted her railings over the weekend!" :) Yours would look really stunning!
ReplyDeleteHey, Rene - I have a black rail and post and love it. The paint is wearing off a little, now. Not trying to "spam" you, but here are some shots of my staircase http://theoldpostroadblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/some-vintage-finds.html

I would definitely use black, again.

Those rails so look sharp! And so classic. I'm in love with Gretchen's runner!
ReplyDeleteThis post is perfect timing for me :) We've been thinking about redoing our light trim on the stairwell to black....just trying to get the motivation going for such a big project. Now I can't wait to go check out the ones you've shared for inspiration.
ReplyDeleteWe painted ours black a few months after we moved in last year. I've never snapped any pics for the blog because I forgot to snap a before pic! It made such a huge difference painting it black that I really wish I had a before pic to compare!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures!! I don't know which one I loved more. Martina
ReplyDeleteI had my front door painted black last summer. The painter admonished "You never want a shiny black door"!
ReplyDeleteBut I do! I do want a shiny black door! Now I have a matte black door covered in fingerprints and I am looking for a new painter!
I have several of these photos already in my design files...definitely going with a black rail and maybe treads this spring. I love this look!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to do black on my rails for sometime...This post confirms that I need to do this. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI love this! Such a classic look. I love the black top rails and white vertical. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI was so happy to see this post. I painted my stairwell black, and it was too black, so I went back in and painted it a very very dark brown, almost black, and it was just perfect.
ReplyDeleteCindy
Beautiful round-up, Rene! These images are inspiring me to break the rules and paint some of the interior doors of my apartment...shh, don't tell the landlord!
ReplyDeleteRhoda told me to paint mine black and I had to think about it. You, my dear, have just convinced me that it is the way to go! Thanks girl!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeleteAlas, I have
an iron bannister
and carpeted stairs.
But, someday....

i love black painted stair rails, they always catch my eye in pictures. i want to do it (badly), but it's a bit like my fear of painting antiques phobia, our current railing has this gorgeous patina, i don't have the heart to paint over it, even though I want the look.
ReplyDeletexo, Tessa
I absolutely love this look. I have been trying to convince my husband, even though I would be the one doing the work, he wasn't on board. Thank you for posting this. I made him look at all the pics, and he LOVES it! Now, where to find the time to do this???? Oh well, maybe this summer.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful images! I love the one coming down the steps with the black rail and entering the livingroom with the lamps lit. That looks so warm and inviting.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever seen the black painted stair rails before but it looks really fresh and modern. I love it! Thanks for sharing these photos, too, they're all so beautiful. And, I'm pleased to be your newest follower!
ReplyDeleteBarb
