If you have been following my blog for a while, then you might remember one week last summer when I painted the wood floors in our converted attic. I'm pretty sure this shocked several of you. As I said before, the floors had never been finished and were in bad shape. Painting them seemed easier and more economical at the time than having them refinished which we will do one day. I am happy to report that almost a year later, the floors have held up well and I am still happy with my decision.
The bed you see in the image above was a trundle bed, but our son had outgrown it and wanted something "older". Mom found an old bed for a song and I painted it glossy black.
The contrast of the black bed against the white floor and blue walls was just what the room needed.
I used muslin to make the duvet cover. Muslin is great for this type of project because it comes in various widths and can be used to make shower curtains and duvet covers easily. To add the ribbon detail, I used single fold bias tape in navy. I found the easiest way to get the right placement was to lay the cover on the bed and pin it. Then I ran it through the sewing machine to secure.
The curtains were made from a flat sheet, total cost $12.00. The lamp was already in the room, but I wanted to make it a little more interesting so I added the monogram and ribbon.
While denim isn't my first choice of fabrics when it comes to pillows, adding this red cross to an existing pillow made me like this one a little more. To make the cross, I used masking tape, a sponge applicator, and red fabric paint. It took less than 5 minutes.
The pillow cases on the bed co-ordinate with the flat sheet used to make the curtains. I wasn't about to stress over making pretty shams for this room when I know exactly where they would end up 99% of the time. Also, the other pillow cases are part of a flannel set from CSN that I recently reviewed. Let's just say they are perfect for those cool winter months. The trio of images came from here and here.
Here is the final room. I'm really happy with the way it turned out and so is our tween.

Rene you sealed the deal on painted floors for me. Knowing yours are still holding up after a year - great news. Now I just have to convince hubby to sleep downstairs for a week so I can do it! (And the tween room looks great too, love all your touches.)
ReplyDeleteYour son's room looks great! Love the painted floors and love the black bed, what a great find!!
ReplyDeleteI love how the room turned out! The duvet looks terrific! And everything came together so well! He must be thrilled. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice room. I have a bed almost identical to you, except it is has "pinneapple" post. Love the color of the room, too!
ReplyDeleteSuch a neat room. I love that bed painted black!
ReplyDeleteRenee, I remember your post about painting the floors, and I loved it. This room also looks great! Isn't it amazing how simple, not to mention economical, it is to make curtains using sheets? I do that all the time. Great job with this room!

it looks awesome- the perfect balance of boy and man. i think we have similarly sized bedrooms in our homes, so can i ask what your son t hings of having a bigger bed in there? i am just wondering because i know when sawyer is older he will want a bigger bed, too, but it will leave the rest of the room with not much space. does he prefer it that way now that he is older and obviously not really playing with toys as much?
ReplyDeleteThanks everybody! Cassie, all of our bedrooms are small. I guess over the years we have gotten used to hanging out in other parts of the house and using the bedrooms only for sleeping. He is thrilled with his new bed so much so that he doesn't want to get up in the morning :)
ReplyDeleteLove the black bed! THis room turned out great Rene!
ReplyDeleteRene, it looks awesome. I love the way all your projects turned out, and seeing how the room has transformed with little $$ but all your hard work is inspiring! Hope you'll do a post on your monogram diy. That is adorable.
ReplyDeleteIt looks so great, Rene! I LOVE all of the little touches to make ordinary things custom...but not overboard. And I am still in love with the painted floors. You are so talented! :)
ReplyDeleteI adore the blue color on the wall...makes the room look so peaceful, yet inviting! A genius idea to dress up the lamp shade with a monogram! I adore the red cross pillow and instantly was transported back to my life-guarding days at our local pool!
ReplyDeletePS I just painted black two twin beds in my client's guest room that are very similar to your son's. They look amazing, and I'm convinced black is the perfect color for a classic bed like that.
ReplyDeleteThe room looks great Rene, I only wish my boys had been a tenth that neat when they were tweens :)
ReplyDeleteWow, you did a great job, Rene! You make it all seem so simple.
ReplyDeleteI know that your son is happy with his new room.
Have a great day.

ReplyDeleteRene, love how you pulled this room together! That duvet is fabulous and I love the mongrammed lampshade so very much!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you made those curtains from sheets! They look awesome - now I need to buy a sewing machine. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love every detail! The floors are my favorite! Did you mention in a previos post where the bedskirt was from , Target maybe?
ReplyDeleteLove what you did in here, including painting the floor. I've seen so many projects using painters tarps, but have never seen anyone use muslin for a bedspread. I think that is so smart & adding the trim was the perfect finish.
