Recently I ordered this new Greek key bedding from Joss & Main.
It arrived the other day and I couldn't be happier. Now comes decision making time. Thanks to pinterest there is lots of inspiration and also thanks to pinterest I am thoroughly confused.
Do I go dark...
or light?...
Even though I love images of dark rooms for the mystery and moodiness they provide, I love white walls more and more.
What about you - do you find yourself going dark or light these days?

If your room gets lots of natural light, you could easily go dark...or just have one dark accent wall.
ReplyDeleteWhite is great too.....black and whie is so sophisticated....you can do whatever you want with the two and not be wrong.
Dark in a well-lit magazine photo is beautiful-- but imagine trying to get out of bed in a black-walled room at 5 am on a February morning-- egad. White is energizing and restful in all the best ways!
ReplyDeletei am of no help. I already posted the pinterest is going to be my undoing.
ReplyDeleteI do love that second room though - the first one is a little 'stand-offish' to me. no idea why.
i love the dark moody colors, but i prefer them as an accent wall. when we did our family room we painted 3 walls white and the focal wall charcoal gray. i love the look! you could always do something like that- like just the wall the bed sits on, and then if you hate it you only have to repaint the one wall.
ReplyDeleteI too like the dark room. However, I do think I would tire of it quickly.
ReplyDeleteThe white or light walls is just timeless and looks so peaceful and relaxing for a bedroom.
Best of luck with your decision! :)
I adore the dark colors on walls if offset by lots of white (which your bedding is, and is gorgeous by the way!) Or the example using the dark area rug as the foundation for the room works well!

I love the idea of the dark walls but Carrie's idea of 3 white walls and 1 dark wall behind the bed sounds intriguing....with the bedding you can't go wrong. It's just paint so if you decide to go all dark and don't like it you can re-do! (I know, easier said than done!)

I'm right there with you - can't decide on my dining room, I love them both. How about getting some black poster board at the $ Store (.50 ea) and tacking it up? I have no doubt you could even come up with something clever to do with the poster board. :)
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'd go light as well. I don't think I could sleep in a room with dark walls, even with such a gorgeous display of plates in the background. I can't wait to see your finished project!
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I've never quite gotten the "focal wall" thing. I'm more of a "let's paint all the walls the same color" girl :) That said, thanks for the ideas. It is always nice to get opinions. My heart is definitely with lighter and brighter. Guess I will have to live through pinterest to get my dark rooms fix.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm with you on the lighter and brighter! A dining room, living room etc. is very different from a bedroom. Also, it depends on what kind of natural light you have: lots? or little? How about a light neutral instead of white?
ReplyDeleteI tried to go dark in the bedroom once and I hated it. It didn't help that we didn't have an abundant amt. of natural light. I would save dark walls for powder rooms, dining rooms, etc. Good luck w/your decision!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on all accounts. Part of me is being pulled into the "all white walls" direction, but I also *love* color and moodiness it invokes. But if you're going to go dark, do all the walls. Can't wait to see your light and bright bedroom. ;-)

P.S. Love the bedding.
Oh, love the dark wall image you posted-- but I agree...a lighter color...especially in a bedroom would be what I would do! Take care, Caroline
ReplyDeleteI agree with a lot of the other commenters -- dark is great in theory but you don't want your bedroom to feel like a cave. I went for light in ours, but considered (and am still considering) a darker focal wall behind the headboard. Best of both worlds? ;)
ReplyDeleteWhen I examine rooms that I love, I find that it's always the light & bright ones that I keep coming back to. Although, I love the navy rug in your second picture.
ReplyDeleteWell... in my last rental house I had TONS of natural light so I was craving some dark walls. The owner would not let me paint and all the walls were as white as could be. Our new rental is much older with a lot less natural light, and I am dying to paint all the walls white! The landlord has painted everything peachy-pink (yuk!).
ReplyDeleteSo... I think it is all about how much light your bedroom gets!
I just recently went dark. My room was stark white before, and then I painted it dark blue (Distance by Sherwin-Williams). I really love it. I have two windows, and I hung some natural colored linen curtains over them, and I also have a couple of large mirrors hanging which do a great job of reflecting the light. As for lighting, I use lamps- two on either side of my bed and two more on my dresser. The lamplight against the deep blue walls is so inviting and relaxing. Good luck!!
ReplyDeleteLight. I'm in the middle of trying to fidn small tweaks that make everything brighter and crisper. I think we'll be mostly simplifying color schemes and replacing dark, formal rugs with neutral, light toned, more casual ones. In love with geometric patterned dhurries right now.
ReplyDeleteWith the crisp white bedding, I think you can go either way. What photos are you MOSTLY drawn towards (or have collected). It's harder to paint over a dark paint. But then again ...it's only paint!
ReplyDeleteOooh...hard decision! I love the look of the dark walls, especially if you have white walls in a lot of other rooms. Plus, it's only paint!! It's one of the easiest things to change in a room!
ReplyDeleteI've been going light. I think our skies are so grey here that it's hard not to want to lighten all the interiors. Love the bedding! Can't wait to see what direction you go in.
ReplyDeleteI do love dark walls in the right space but I'm finding as I'm getting "older" that I am drawn more to lighter and softer walls. It seems to affect my mood - the lightness and airiness of a room so I go after lighter colors. I find I can always add fun pops of color in accent pieces and pillows. Your bedding is beautiful, Rene! Very chic! We just ordered Greek Key tile for our pool.
ReplyDeleteUgh, I have a tough time making decisions like this--and then I go and change my mind after I do it, so maybe I'm not the best judge. But I think the bedroom is one place you can go dark if you're tempted. It's cozy and will be awesome contrast to the bedding and is great for sleeping! Love the bedding. It's going to look great no matter what!
ReplyDeleteYou are asking the wrong person...who's whole house is white but I have loved that first picture forever. If you have a lot of windows........a lot. Maybe
ReplyDeleteI like the light
ReplyDeletecolor, unless you
have A LOT of sun
streaming into your
room....then you
might want to cozify : )
I'm sure it will be
gorgeous, either way,
once it's given the
RENE TOUCH!

Part of the beauty of blogging and pinterest is learning what you like to look at in pictures versus what you can live with, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteI love to look at dark rooms, but I don't think I could live with one...
Love your bedding. Classic.

I love the bedding, beautiful! I find myself going lighter, white actaully. All of my room are now white with the exception of the top portion of my bedroom which is light blue. I am debating on my son's room, either white or a light gray. I do love the dramatic look of dark but I just feel better with my house being lighter. :)
ReplyDeleteI did a black dining room in 2004 and still have it and love it. When we entertain it is cozy and dramatic.
ReplyDeleteLove the contrast of the first photo no doubt I go for the drama.
My son's room is white board and batten with Serena and lily's steel paint color on top . Love , the best of boyh worlds. I think it would look amazing with your new fab bedding:)
