Big Black Mirrors

Thank you so much for all of your comments yesterday about the slip covered cube.  I wasn't sure how it would turn out and made several mistakes in the process.  Many of you requested a tutorial and I promise to post one soon now that I have the kinks worked out.

When I showed new pictures of our entry last week, I received several emails asking for the source of the black mirror.  You remember that it wasn't always black.

It had a silver-ish finish when we bought it and I didn't think it would provide enough pop against our newly painted white walls.  I recently stumbled upon a folder of "black mirrors" that I had been collecting for inspiration.

If you are also curious about the source, our mirror came from a local store that has since closed.  However, while out and about the other day shopping for clients, I saw mirrors that were similar to mine.

Ross $149 (stained wood, gold)

Garden Ridge $129 (black)

And of course there is always the Ikea option for much less....

Ikea (brown/black 79.99)

I hope this helps.  Have a great day!

  3. I was hoping you'd do a tutorial on the slipcover for the cube. I have also seen similar mirrors at Marshall's and Home Goods. I would love to have a mirror like that in our home someday.

  8. I have the black IKEA one in my room, and the only downside is that the glass isn't beveled around the frame edge, which can give it a higher end appearance... other than that I love it. :)

  21. You've made me a huge, HUGE fan, Rene. I'm looking around the house now for a place to put one...

So, I like the leaned look, but I'm glad you chose to attach yours to the wall.

  22. I like the leaned look too, but with such a small space hanging it seemed to make more sense. We attached those hinge bumpers to the hinges to keep the door from banging into it.

  23. Love the way huge mirrors bounce light around a room. Yours looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing all the great sources. Too bad I live so far from an Ikea.

  25. Loved the idea of you painting your mirror--so thought about painting my medicine Cabinet (it is inexpensive) It is white and would like it to be black, would you recommend -- spray or brush-- and would you use primer as well.

Thanks so much for all of your inspirations.............

  26. Kathy, my mirror is made of wood or similar and I painted it with a foam brush and BM black semi gloss. This is my favorite black. Don't worry about getting paint on the mirror - it easily scrapes off with a razor. If your medicine cabinet can be easily removed and taken outside that is an option, but I wouldn't use spray paint inside. I hope this helps.
