As soon as the greenery comes down and all of the Christmas stuff goes back to the attic, the paperwhites go from this...
to this. I normally stagger my plantings beginning in the fall so that I have a constant supply of bloomers, but this year I was a bit off schedule.
That is OK though because now that the house feels sparse from all of the extras being put away, these pretty flowers fill the space. They remind me of the new year and the promise of a fresh start.
paper whites are my favorite thing at this time of year. they are crisp and white and the perfect transition from holiday decor to the hope of spring to come...yours look lovely!

ReplyDeleteI stagger my bulbs but this year they were all off. They took for ever to bloom and I didn't change a thing from prior years. Oh, they will be beautiful just in time for Valentines day :)

Nothing says Holidays to me more than the scent of paperwhites. Mine were lovely, although once again way too tall and ungainly. I ended up "picking" the last few and putting them in a blue and white ginger jar. They are a lovely addition in my new powder room.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever tried adding a little vodka to the water you use? I tried it last year to try to keep mine from getting to leggy and requiring help to stand up. It worked OK, but I didn't get the bloom that I wanted. I've heard there are other options out there. Happy New Year Rene! Looking forward to your 2012 projects!
ReplyDeleteThe burlap ties are a great idea! I planted some paperwhites for the first time this year and now that they're all tall some of the stalks have started to fall.

ReplyDeleteAva, yes I have tried adding alcohol. Sometimes it makes a difference and sometimes it doesn't. Either way, I love the flowers :)

ReplyDeleteI love paperwhites but they make me sneeze! No other flower makes me sneeze but they do and I cannot figure out why...so we plant amaryllis bulbs and they are still blooming. Your paperwhites are soooo pretty!

ReplyDeletebeautiful! I've missed having paperwhites for a few years now, but I finally got 3 (as in bulbs!) planted :) Not even blooming yet, but finally growing. They always look so pretty in milk glass. Love it.

ReplyDeleteI've found that by putting the bulbs into tall glass vases and pitchers, I don't have the "falling over" problem! They stay nice and upright, with the vase to hold them. I put in a few dark shiny stones then the bulbs....

This is my first year growing them and I'm really enjoying them. A lot of people say they don't like the scent so I was worried about that but now they're in full bloom, I think they're fine. It's certainly a unique scent and if people grew up with their mothers and grandmothers planting them, it would certainly bring wonderful memories flooding back.
