Kim, left a comment suggesting that I look into grout stain. I did find some helpful videos on you tube and even looked for grout stain at Lowes. It looks like and easy enough project to take on if you are considering changing up your tile. As for re-grouting, you must first buy a tool that costs close to $300 to grind the grout 1/8" deep before applying the new grout. My short attention span and I could never do this and I am not sure that I want to now.
I will be the first to admit that the 80's are probably my least favorite decade for fashion and decor. The movies and music were kinda fun though.
In response to Camille's comment about the stripe on the tile, here is another shot of our bathroom...

And, I do need this shower curtain don't I? Target did carry one similar as did Lands End, but they are no longer available. Darn it.

Your bathroom is lovely Rene! Yes, you do need the curtain, I will keep an eye out for one.

I didn't realize the walls were dark--it looks pretty great as is. Since LE discontinued the shower curtain (I know which one you're referring to), couldn't you just add 3 bands of black fabric to a plain white shower curtain? Certainly a seamstress could tackle this, too.
ReplyDeleteThat shower curtain is great! You could easily paint one with your awesome DIY skills. You made those striped drop cloth curtains.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, you could whip up a shower curtain in no time! And, I love your tile as is, too!
ReplyDeleteRene I love that you do follow-up type posts...I learn so much about design from reading your thought processes when making design decisions. Love it!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes you really DO need that shower curtain...it would look awesome in your gorgeous bathroom.
I live in an old house, and decorating and updating one is always a balancing act. It's a challenge to keep the historic fabric and integrity of the spaces, while making them comfortable and livable and appropriate for life TODAY.
ReplyDeleteMy rule is this: If it's in good shape and it's original and permanent, whatever "it" is, it stays. Tile in an original bathroom falls into this category. If it's easily changed and will not permanently damage an original feature, anything goes. Things like paint and fabric and accessories can do wonders.
In case you missed it, this is the person who cleaned the original encaustic tile basketweave floor in her basement bathroom with a SANDER to try to save it. (It worked really well, BTW ... but I ruined the sander.)
Thanks ya'll! Yes, I suppose a few bands of black fabric across the bottom could do the trick. I will keep you posted.
ReplyDeleteI could see you easily sewing up your own version of that shower curtain. I'm not a fan of the basic square tile, but mostly it's because it's what we have in our master, and I'm dying to take a sledge hammer to it. However I'd advise you to do what we're doing which is nothing until the big remodel that changes the layout. Looking forward to see your bathroom updates.
ReplyDeleteI really like your bathroom with the dark walls!! The Kate Spade bathroom has always been one of my favorites! Take care, Caroline
ReplyDeleteI love your bathroom exactly the way it is...that shower curtain would be a nice addition. We lived in an 1930s house in St. Louis and it had the same exact wall and floor tile. Back then I did not paint the above tile black...that was in 1989...I think. Anyway...I absolutely love it right down to the monogrammed towels!
ReplyDeleteYour bath is beautiful!!! ... and that last image - WOW. Love the green and yes, the shower curtain too! Thanks for the great inspiration. Have a great evening - Jalon
ReplyDeleteJust saw this and wanted to say that I cleaned our grout with baking soda a bit of water (so it is a paste) and a toothbrush. Time consuming, yes; worth it, definitely! Now our tiles are not as old as yours are but it would be a cheap thing to test somewhere unobtrusive to see if it will remove the stains. I would say leave it on for a bit then scrub it off with the toothbrush, a rag and some water.
ReplyDeleteRene, your bathroom is stunning. I love the tile even more now!! Yes, you could absolutely whip up a shower curtain like this -- I mean if you can sew your own slipcover, you can do a striped shower curtain for sure. :)
ReplyDeleteGosh, love your bathroom. Just had to say it again.
Camille
Thanks again everybody! Rumor has it that the shower curtain I want is at a local Target. My fingers are crossed that it is true.
