Of course there are always windows that are better off with little or no window treatment such as this example from BDG Style. Love her blog, by the way.
However, if you do have larger windows that call for curtains, I almost always recommend hanging the rod just under the crown molding and to either side of the window so that the majority of the window (minus the casing) is exposed. This allows maximum natural light to enter the room and it just looks better.
Here are a few examples...

YES!!! Did this in my master bedroom Great trick and because my walls are dark brown with the extra long white panels, it lightened the room even more!
ReplyDeleteWhat about when your ceilings are 10 feet high? what's your suggestion?...seems to high to go all the way to the crown.
ReplyDeleteI agree Rene! High and wide is the way to go. It adds so much more to a room.
ReplyDeleteTammy, I think it depends on the size of the room and how far the top of the window is from the ceiling. On occasion it is better not to go all the way to the ceiling - especially with really high ceilings.
ReplyDeleteGreat tip! We just hung new drapes in our living room and I think we need to move them higher. Thanks for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteI agree Rene. I learned the hard way in our first house. I didn't hang the curtains wide enough and they were always covering the window and blocking valuable natural light. Love the first photo - I'm off to check out her blog!
ReplyDeleteI agree too!! Thanks for mentioning my blog :)
ReplyDeleteExcellent tip! I was just reading about this recently. Thanks for sharing these ideas!
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this! It's a must on my list to hand them tall and a bit wider as well! Just under the crown molding is a great rule of thumb! Beautiful pics as well!!
ReplyDeleteI agree...always like to bring the eye UP.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree! They make the ceilings look so much higher!
ReplyDeleteWow, I really love it when you show us a counter example to the rule. The way those photos are hung next to the unadorned window is totally perfect.
ReplyDeleteIt really helps to see the difference in the drawing! What a difference it makes.
ReplyDeleteI saw this just in time! I'm in the process of making my curtains and haven't hemmed them yet... or hung the curtain rod. Perfect. I grew up with curtains right above the windows... glad I have been enlightened!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous,
ReplyDeleteYay! So glad to help. Please share pictures on the C&V facebook page when you finish :)
