Our son Tyler is 16, very preppy, swims, loves nature and musicians like Josh Ritter. He wants to incorporate some of these elements into his walls and plans to give me a "wish list" of what he would like. He is also requesting black-out curtains. In the summers, he swims 4 hours a day and is also a swim coach. When he isn't swimming or working, he sleeps - or at least tries to. I have a diy project in mind using burlap and blackout fabric that should take care of this problem. Before we go any further, here is a picture of his room now. Only in reality, you would see open drawers, clothes everywhere, wet towels, size 12 shoes, etc. You get the idea.
The walls are Ralph Lauren, grass green which Tyler chose several years ago. The furniture was mine when I was a child - very traditional, but it isn't going anywhere. You can read about the white floors that I painted here.
Here are a few images I have shown him.
Here is the mood board I came up with.
I plan to start this project in the next few weeks and will keep you posted. There is a flurry of activity going on here. Can you sense it? My mind is spinning with ideas of things I want to do. Focus!
On another note, are you enjoying the Olympics? On any given day, you will find at least one of us glued to the television. Summer before last, our son was honored to race in the same heat as Olympian Nick Thoman, who just won the silver in 100 back.

Love all the inspiration pics. I love gallery walls too. Great that your son is a swimmer. I love the Olympics, and I am glued to the TV too. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteBoys rooms seem so foreign to me with a house full of girls, but I love what your thoughts. I was actually at the Southern Living Idea house a couple of weeks ago and they had a dark gray and green room. It was fabulous. I'll see if I have any photos and send them if I do!
ReplyDeleteTake care,
Lori
Love your inspiration board and the traditional vibe. I had to embrace my son's more modern taste (kicking & screaming)! We're working on a gallery wall too, it's been fun putting it all together with him. GO USA!!
ReplyDeleteLove the inspiration! I am still working on my tween son! We are glued to Olympics. Missy Franklin attends our daughter's (and sons' future school! Love the blog!
ReplyDeleteI love your inspiration and can't wait to see this project develop! Thanks for sharing it with us. :-)
ReplyDeleteRene I think it is so great your son wants to do an artful wall in his room! Good taste like his Mother!

What a great picture of your son and the other swimmers...that must have been so fun for him. Very cool. (and yes, watching the Olympics all the time!)
ReplyDeleteLove that he is letting you do his room and your ideas are terrific...can't wait to see the pictures and read about the transformation!
LOVE where this is going- love the black chevron into the mix!
ReplyDeleteAhhh...this is going to be cool! Loved your examples and bravo to your son for being such a hard worker!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! You are the best mom ever. Will you adopt me? ;) I love your inspiration photos! I'm sure it's going to turn out great! I can't wait to see. And hopefully I'll get some ideas for our master bedroom redo. xoxo
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I love when the kids get to be the client - this will be fun and I love your inspiration photos and board. I used to swim when I was younger and my brother swam through college so we love watching the swimming on TV - takes me back to those long days of swim meets. Did you see the 200 fly last night? ugh, what a race and how devastating for Phelps to be touched out like that - and PS I can't even imagine swimming a 200 fly - yikes.
ReplyDeleteOh I love what you have planned! As a mom to two (toddler) boys, I'm glad that there is hope for a classy boys room in the future. haha!
ReplyDeleteI die over the color of those walls....personally I would rather do a boys room than a girls!
ReplyDeleteNo way! I swim for MAC haha small world!
ReplyDeleteLove your board and all your inspiration photos! Can't wait to see it all come together.
ReplyDeleteYes! Fill those walls with fun art!!
ReplyDeleteLove the mood board for Tyler's room. I'm currently re-doing several rooms in my home and it will take a while!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun project,
ReplyDeleteRene! When my son
turned 11 we re-did
his room, but I can
imagine another go
round when he reaches
16. Great inspiration
images and mood board!
Happy Thursday,
xo Suzanne
His room color is fabulous. I love the idea board and the new plans! Can't wait to see it.

hi Rene...i see you have a son who is a swimmer...me too! He now swims in college. I have framed almost every cap he has ever had and he has a great "grid " of caps hung in his room. I'm thinking a few framed caps might look great in your son's gallery Wall?! Love your blog..

Love it! I am in the process of getting inspiration for my boys' room redo too. I get so excited at this part of the process! Can't wait to see your finished product.

Great mood board! And that rolling underbed basket is such a find. I'm planning on using it for a client but want some for my house too!
