Re-Freshed

Hello!  I trust that your new year is off to a nice start and that you are rested and ready for the beginning of something special.  I know that I am.  The break from blogging was nice - probably the longest I have been away ever.

I contemplated starting back the day after new year's but figured it would be like starting a diet on a Wednesday - no one does that!  While away, I thought a lot about where I am and where I want to be. My vision is easily clouded under "business-as-usual" circumstances.  So, the break came at a good time.

The Blog
When I started the blog several years ago, it was fun.  I was busy creating things and doing projects around our home - still am.  I always said that I would continue blogging as long as I enjoyed it - which I do.

Then the design business grew and advertising opportunities came along.  Many of you have strong feelings about advertising on blogs.  Honestly, I'm not a fan of ads, but they do help supplement our household income and allow me to continue with many of the projects around our home.  I have been thinking about the sponsorship and plan to continue with it, but never want any of my readers to feel like that is the main focus.  Sometimes I feel like it reads that way and I do not want that.  It is important that the ads are relevant to the blog and hopefully appeal to my readers while at the same time give my sponsors good exposure.  Balance is key.

I want you to be comfortable here and to be inspired.  Sound good?  That said, I may be posting with less frequency, but hopefully with more meaning and purpose.

Now that I have babbled about that, I would love to simplify the blog and am in the market for a blog designer.  Any suggestions?  I want simple.  Actually, "simple" might be my motto for 2013 in all areas of my life!  Also in the works is a website for the design side.  I'm busy pulling together photos of finished projects and hope to have that up and running shortly.  Thanks ahead of time for your patience during the process.

Around Our Home
Blogging is fun because it pushes me to try things that might be too risky with a client.  I like being the guinea pig, but am ready to settle down so that I can really focus on my work.  That said, I have been sifting through countless images over the break really studying rooms and trying to find myself - or at least my most favorite decorating style.  As much I LOVE working with my wonderful clients, sometimes I do not have time to think about our own home.

The holiday break gave me time to carefully consider what I like to see on a daily basis.  I'm sure that my design buddies can agree that sometimes we are tired of seeing patterns & colors before the rest of the world embraces them.  Guess it just comes with the territory.  I have a plan in place for our home - just fine tuning really, which I will share on the blog. However, I do have a couple of pretty big projects in the works.  More on that later.  Also, Rick and I went through closets and drawers and purged like crazy!  I have listed furniture and a rug on Craigslist as well as a few things on Ebay.  We dropped off several boxes of stuff at the Goodwill trailer.  Paring down never felt better!

All this to say...

I'm back.  Re-freshed & focused.

  1. I love your blog and visit often but very seldom comment but I felt the need to today. I can certainly understand your need to step back and "rest" from blogging as I have been doing the same thing lately. I probably blogged less in 2012 than in the last 5 years I've had a blog...while I still enjoy it and hope to continue for as long as I want, there are other things more important.

Even though you may post not as often as before, you will continue to be one of my "favorites"!

  3. Happy 2013 and welcome back! I'm with you on the topics of balance and simplicity and I hope we can purposefully encourage each other in these areas this year. :) I read "7" by Jen Hatmaker over the Thanksgiving holiday and haven't stopped thinking about how I've let some unimportant things crowd out the important. Wishing you the very best of God's blessings this year!

It's the first thing I check EVERY day once I get my students started on their work. I look forward to this new year with you and all of your wonderful inspirations and advice.

  8. Glad you are back and can understand your need to simplify and just refresh yourself as well. I'm excited to see what you have planned and what these big projects are. No matter how often you blog, I think it's always good stuff and love reading it even if I don't comment very often. And I love a good purge, maybe too much, my hubby always gets worried when I say it's time to purge. Lol. Glad to hear your hubby was on board with it.

I think Elizabeth @ The Mustard Ceiling does a great job with clean, simple blog design. A freshen up for Room Rx is on my list too....

  15. Everyone deserves a break and I think most of us feel very good about it - I know I do. I was feeling the pressure of the holidays and projects that I'm working on, not to mention being a Mom and a wife. You know how it is. We've got a lot planned for 2013 and I'm excited for it all. It sounds like you got your plan down too and had some time to think about 2013. Good for you Rene! I always enjoy your blog and truly believe less is more in the grand scheme of quality vs quantity.

  16. Rene, I couldn't agree more. What a great time of year to refocus and pare down. The calendar naturally provides us a new start, so why not take advantage of it like you're doing? :)

  22. Glad you were able to take a break Rene and enjoy lots of time with your family. I did miss your posts! I am in a major simplify, clean out, re-group phase. I just finished cleaning out my closet and donating quite a bit. My husband did as well and we're on a roll now. We're going room by room and really simplifying everything. Happy New Year to you Rene.

  24. Rene: So many of us are rethinking our blogs, our work, and social media in general. I agree, simplify! I think there is SO much out there and coming right at us each and every day that it has become just too much. We have to "see the trees for the forest" as they say. Twitter is one think I am definitely cutting way back. The blog...well, I am redesigning it as we speak... but also redefining it a bit. I'll be looking forward to seeing all your new looks.

  25. I think we are all going through this blogging/business transition now. My mind is exactly where yours is in that department. I struggle so much with balance but also a desire to do it all! I will continue to look to you and your blog for inspiration in all aspects and can't wait to see what you come up with. Welcome back!
